Special Announcement!

The Rarefied Recording Workshop is back!

rarefy: to make more complex, intricate, and rich

I pride myself on a

lofty approach to all aspects of the

craft of music production.

A studio where your music can truly flourish...

  • Professionally designed/built with superb acoustics
  • A wide assortment of incredible vintage and new gear
  • Meticulously maintained and well organized
  • Welcoming, intimate, and inspiring

"I had a blast working at Rarefied for the first time.

The listening environment of the control room

and sound of the Neve console

made everything effortless to capture and record.

Too many great toys to use in one day.

The session kept going without a hiccup.

I’m excited for the next round of recording at Rarefied."

Darrell Thorp (engineer)

Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, Beck

"I love recording with Roy at Rarefied.

It has become my favorite studio in town.

Roy is a pro and super easy to work with.

The studio is comfortable, clean, and laid back.

Five outta five!"

Jason Blackmore (artist)

Matelotage, Death Eyes, Sisters

"I have been a studio engineer for over 50 years

and have worked in some of the finest studios

both in the US and my adopted home in the UK.

Studio philosophy is different everywhere,

but what is common is that great studios

have great owners who are passionate

about recording and creating a space

where you are inspired to create

and have the tools to capture that creativity.

Rarefied is a studio that meets that test with ease."

Dennis Weinreich (engineer)

Queen, Jeff Beck, Super Tramp, Talk Talk

"Beautiful studio. Very well maintained

and clean and most importantly,

they have excellent gear!

And Roy knows how to use it!

All of the experiences I have had here

have been very comfortable and fun

and I was definitely satisfied with the final product."

Matty LaBarber (artist)

Of The People, Cardinal Moon, Moment of Truth

"Rarefied has the vibe, gear, and space

to be creative and enjoy the process of recording.

Too often, we as engineers and producers

are under the pressure of time.

At Rarefied, the atmosphere creates a space

where the music takes precedence

and time stops. It’s a true musicians' studio."

Joe Marlett (engineer)

Blink 182, Switchfoot, Unwritten Law

"What can I say, Roy at Rarefied is a masterful engineer.

I recently started making music again

and recorded everything at my home studio.

I wanted an experts touch when it came to mixing

and mastering the track and I came across

Rarefied as he is local to me. Low and behold,

in a matter of 4 days of discussing my vision

for my song and a couple revisions,

Roy had a beautiful sounding song ready for delivery.

He was great to work with and all this was done virtually."

Ramin M. (artist)

"Rarefied is an amazing recording studio.

Great sounding rooms, a ton of really cool gear.

One of my favorite spots to record in San Diego!."

Tanner Sparks (engineer)

Switchfoot, Weezer

POSSIBILITIES AT RAREFIED

The tender dawning of creation. When it's time to make your idea tangible, my meticulous approach helps to hone your music and mold it towards its truest form. With an abundance of mics, instruments, and outboard gear, I have every tool you will need.

Form and rarefy. Within the raw recording of your song lies a sonic sculpture waiting to be heard. My job is to shape, forge, adorn, and gently reveal what was always there. I mix on a Neve console with a combination of digital and analog gear for the best of both worlds.

The final presentation. If your song is a piece of art, mastering is the way it gets displayed. The lighting of the room, the color of the wall, the space that lies between. I seek to imbue your music with power and illuminate the details within. My ears and speakers lead the way.

Need something else?

Editing, tuning, alignment, noise removal/restoration, reamping, running signals through gear, training, consulting, analog summing, format converting, podcasting, photo/video shoots, etc. Many things are possible. Just ask!
