Hi! I'm Roy, Owner/Chief Engineer of Rarefied Recording in San Diego, CA, co-host of the Prepping For The Studio podcast, and author of "A Musician's Guide To The Recording Studio". I've been involved in recording for over 25 years!

I started as a teenage musician in Chicago just wanting to get a decent recording of his basement band. After teaching myself the basics on an old Tascam cassette 4 track I ended up attending the "Audio Engineering" program at the University of Miami where I received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with an audio emphasis.

After college I went to work at Qualcomm, Inc. in San Diego developing audio chips for cell phones. I also maintained a very strong weekend side gig of recording/mixing at a home studio dubbed, The Habitat.

After 10 years at Qualcomm I had enough savings to build a proper studio and set to work on what has become Rarefied Recording. I've been full time at the studio since 2015, recording, mixing, and mastering for local clients of various genres. 

Brian is also an Illinois native. He came out to Los Angeles in 1979 with only a notion of getting into music, but it wasn't long before he found himself employed by Cherokee Studios as a runner. In short order he worked his way up to assistant engineer, engineer, and even the head of the engineering staff! His first credit was for the LA punk band, X, with Ray  Manzarek (of The Doors) producing. 

After 6 years at Cherokee, Brian moved over to A&M Studios where he leveled up to working with bands like Sting, U2, and The Eagles. Eventually he went freelance and bounced around different studios working with artists like Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, and Stone Temple Pilots. 

Eventually Brian landed in San Diego and has become a part of the engineering community here while continuing to go up to LA for tracking sessions as well as doing mix work from home for artists and TV/film projects.
