THE RAREFIED RECORDING
3 DAY WORKSHOP
An in-person intensive taught by Rarefied owner/Chief Engineer, Roy Silverstein, and the acclaimed engineer/mixer Brian Scheuble.
A crash course in the fundamentals of recording technology, microphones, and the recording chain. Real world examples of recording drums, bass, and guitar. Demonstrations of the sound of different mics, mic placements, equalization, and compression.
More real world examples of recording other common instruments including piano, keyboards, and vocals. Demonstration of the sound of different mics, preamps, and compressors on vocals. Real world example of how to setup a mix and basic balancing/panning/equalization/etc.
Continuation of how to mix a song. More real world examples of how to use compression, saturation, transient designers, reverb, delay, and other effects. An opportunity to twist some knobs and get your hands dirty with real hardware. A discussion of mixing philosophy, tips, tricks, and the role of mastering.
Together bringing over 5 decades of recording/mixing experience, Roy and Brian are extremely passionate about the art of record making and eager to share what they've learned with you.
Roy runs Rarefied and has served San Diego's local music community since the studio opened in 2013. He came up through the home recording side of things and knows what it's like having hardly any gear and working in bedrooms/livingrooms.
Brian is an independent engineer and mixer and cut his teeth in Los Angeles for many many years working with A-list artists such as Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, Ringo Starr, Fiona Apple, Elton John, Nine Inch Nails, and Death Cab For Cutie to name a few! He has worked in some of the finest studios alongside top notch producers. We're lucky to have him here in San Diego and part of this workshop.

The Rarefied Recording 3 Day Workshop will only include 6 or 7 participants which keeps the instructor to student ratio very small. What we teach you will be applicable to any DAW you use. We will be using Pro Tools, but this is not a Pro Tools course by any means. We show, through practical application of actually recording a song with an artist or band, the fundamental techniques to get great sounds on common instruments and then how to mix by actually mixing the song together. All of this takes place at Rarefied Recording, a truly professional studio with an amazing collection of mics, instruments, and hardware (plus plug-ins!). If you learn best through seeing, hearing, and touching things in real life and having real time conversations with knowledgable instructors, this is for you!
TBD
After finding 6-7 interested students, we will find three consecutive days that work for everyone.
